Spring Board Meeting – April 30, 2003

Attendees:  Ann Green, Norma Clinton, Cathy Williams, Claudette Millstead, Renee Setina, Carol Crow, John W. Koenig, Sharon Smith, Mary Lou Vehige, Tim R. Randolph, Tom Reddig, Carole Truby-Bisges, Beth Zeibig, Danyel Anderson, Melissa Stith and Shelly Zafe

 

 

Call to order – President:  Sharon Smith called the meeting to order at 8:10 pm.

                                      

Secretary’s Report – Shelly Zafe:    The minutes of the January 18, 2003 board meeting were posted on the MoCLS website.  There are no changes to the minutes.  Mary Lou motioned for the minutes to be approved.  John seconded the motion.  The meeting minutes from the Jan. 18, 2003 meeting were approved as presented on the website.  Note: When printing the minutes from the website, it does not print to fit the page.  Request from the webmaster to include instructions on how to print the minutes to page.

 

Treasurer’s Report- Nancy Reddig:  The Treasurer’s report will be discussed at the Business meeting on Friday.

Executive Secretary’s Report- Nancy Reddig:  no report

 

President Elect’s Report- Cathy Williams:  written report includes:

 

  • Has copies of IL licensure bill for anyone interested in reading
  • Has copies of Paula Garrott’s testimonies for why licensure is important
  • Attended 2 state board meetings.  Was unable to attend the other meetings.
  • Attended the National Meeting in Orlando and served in the house of delegates and attended the region caucus meeting.
  • Attended Legislative Days in Washington DC.  Visited the offices of Jim Talent and Christopher Bond.  There were 6 people in our group from Missouri.  ASCLS/CLMA joined with the laboratory coalition in our meetings.
  • Attended one regional meeting.  The second meeting was cancelled due to travel during war time and is being rescheduled as a teleconference on May 20th.
  • Will serve as monitor/speaker for the legislative session at the State Meeting in Jeff City.
  • Serving as a mentor for a CLS student in training.  She is attending Weber State in Utah as an internet student.  She has an associate degree and is completing her bachelor degree and taking CLS classes on the internet.  Her training is based in our laboratory.

A.  Cape Girardeau/Poplar Bluff – Ann Green:      

 

  • 8 MT’s are graduating this Spring and jobs are plentiful
  • 3 students are already ASCLS members: 1 from IL, 1 from TN, 1 from MO
  • Southeast Missouri State University has 20 declared MT majors!!

 

B.  Columbia/Jefferson City – Carol Truby-Bisges:

 

  • Registration is low
  • Little MoCLS representation from this area, most help from CLMA for this meeting

C.  Hannibal/Kirskville – Heather Tritsch: not present, no report

D.  Kansas City – Sandy Claussen:  written report as follows:

 

  • Contacted 2 KC District lapsed members by e-mail (which came back undeliverable) and by letter using a standard form letter that introduces me as the KC District Representative, includes a plea to renew, lists issues and activities that ASCLS is currently involved in, a list of activities and meetings coming up, the website for online renewal, and a request to contact me with reasons for non-renewal.

Second Year Board Member – Candi Barker

 

  1. Biochemistry/Urinalysis/Ligand – Zola Golden: not present
  2. Education – Mary Lou Vehige:
  • Has a preliminary program for Philadelphia meeting, July 22-26, 2003 at the Wyndham Hotel
  • House of Delegates meeting will be scheduled from 10-12:30
  • Full registration fee is $275.  Hotel is $159.  Tax 14%.
  • Controversial topic:  Where is the profession of CLS going?  Master’s Level entry vs.  Bachelor’s degree 
  • Enrollment into St. Louis CLS program is up, highest freshman enrollment in 25 years, but will not know totals until Fall semester.

 

  1. Hematology/Coagulation – Tim Randolph: 

·        Taking over as Vice-Chair for Hematology SA

·        6 new members to Consumer questions website, currently 40 people who field questions, but still need more volunteers to answer questions

·        has been nominated for Alpha Mu Tau Award

·        request for outdated/overstock laboratory equipment that can be used for Haiti lab

 

  1. Immunology/Immunohematology- Carol Crow:  no report at this time
  2. Laboratory Administration – Barbara Parkhill:  not present
  3. Microbiology – OPEN
  4. Phlebotomy – Claudette Millstead: written report as follows:
    • I am currently writing an article to be published in the next issue of the So Show Me.  It will discuss the new recommended “Order of Draw” concerning the use of plastic tubes, survey information on phlebotomy safety devices being used in MO hospitals and suggested readings for phlebotomy continuing education.  I mailed 15 surveys to various hospitals in MO and hope to have at least a 50% return.  This should allow phlebotomists to know some of the choices hospital phlebotomists made to meet the Needlestick Safety and Prevention Act of 1999.  I also attended the fall and Spring MoCLS Board Meetings.

-  Mailed to MoCLS members and Missouri hospital lab directors

-  Will include info about newly elected officers, annual awards, reprint of weak D article from AABB news, +???????

P.A.C.E.

·        Approved 26 annual conference programs for P.A.C.E. credit

-Prepared attendance rosters, evaluation forms, “mini” program that included P.A.C.E. #, CEU #, objectives

·        Total CEUs = 39

 

B.  Spring Meeting – Carole Truby-Bisges

 

  1.  Student Affairs – Melissa Stith:

·        Held a PDA raffle for the Spring Meeting

      D.  Student Rep – April Mattlage: no report

 

      E-F.   Bylaws/Government Affairs – John Koenig:  written report are as follows:

·        No Bylaws changes

·        Must come to a decision on whether to change organization name to ASLCS – MO

·        Tax exempt letter does not have current organization name, may prove troublesome in the future for next Spring meeting

·        Attended the ASCLS Meeting in Orlando

·        Attended Region VI Council Meeting in St. Louis as Region VI GAC/PAC Chair

·        Continued work on the Consumer Web Response Team

·        Nominated for Region VI Director to be elected at the Annual Meeting in Philadelphia in July

·        Attended ASCLS/CLMA Legislative Symposium on March 17

·        Along with the Laboratory Coalition made Congressional visits to Missouri Senators Bond and Talent and MO Representative Gephardt’s legislative offices to discuss legislative issue discussed at the Legislative Symposium

·        Assisted with the PAC booth during the Legislative Symposium.  The ASLCS PAC collected a little over $800. during the Symposium.

·        Obtained items and materials to be used by Missouri and Kansas to set up a PAC Booth at their respective state meetings.

·        Collected items for this year’s MSF Silent Auction

 

  1. Membership – Danyel Anderson:  written report are as follows:

 

    • Access to Member rosters- due to problems with sending electronic lists, ASCLS now has a location on the ASCLS web site where rosters can be generated.  This requires a user name and password.
    • New member folders- we ran out of white folders, so I purchased new blue folders that includes info about MoCLS/ASCLS.
    • Old Faithful Awards – Who is in charge, is there something I should be doing and where do I get information on the length of Membership?
    • Submitted statistics of lapsed and current MoCLS membership numbers as of April 14, 2003.  (stats are on file with secretary)
    • 3 new student members have joined ASCLS!! One from KC, STL and Cape  J

 

H.  Missouri Scholarship – Tom Reddig:  written report are as follows:

·        Total in account:  $23, 932.31

·        Total interest earned and reported to IRS:  $166.86

·        Will no longer accept Silent Auction items without names/prices on them after this year’s Silent Auction

·        Silent Auction (Kansas City) profits: $1148.00

·        Had one application and award for continuing education scholarship – John Koenig:  $610.

·        Initiated first annual “Outstanding Student Scholarship Campaign”.  Letters sent to all of Missouri’s Program Directors asking for nominations for “outstanding” student.  Finalists to receive $200.00.  Received three nominations. 

Each will receive the $200.00 award:

Erin Chadborne – nominated by Ann Green of SE Missouri Hospital’s program

Allison Forrester -- nominated by Ann Green of SE Missouri Hospital’s program

April Mattlage—nominated by St. John’s (Joplin) program

·        Initiated “Outstanding Poster Program”- First place to receive $25; Second place to receive $15; and Honorable mention(s) to receive $10.

·        One “annual” motion was made, with it passing, which gave MSF $97 (Motion: $1 per active member donated to MSF)

·        Silent Auction activities:  Submitted ads to SoShowMe for auction items.  Communicated with Carole Truby-Bisges and Robert Black III about auction and Annie Oller Lectureship.

·        Sumbitted articles to SoShowMe about scholarship and auction.

·        Communicated with Carole-Truby Bisges, Paula Garrott, and Elissa Passiment about State Licensure.

·        Edited minutes of BOD meetings.

·        Attended two of the BOD meetings.

 

 

K.  Professional Affairs -  Renee Setina: written report are as follows:

Attended the following meetings:

·        2002 World Congress in Orlando, FL – July 2002

·        MoCLS Board Meeting

a.       September 2002 Board Meeting –Carthage, MO

b.      November 2002 Board Meeting – Jefferson City, MO

c.       January 2003 Board Meeting – Jefferson City, MO

·        Plan to attend 2003 Meeting in Philadelphia in July.

·        Mailed 146 packets to Missouri hospitals for Medical Laboratory Week

·        Organized for proclamations to be signed by Governor, Springfield and Joplin Mayor. 

·        Arranged for a book sale at the Spring Meeting, but hotel accommodations were not sufficient, so instead arranged a raffle of Bath & Bodyworks basket for CMN donation.

 

No old/new business discussed.
